Mayar Sherif's Inspiring Comeback: From Rock Bottom to Reigning Champion (2026)

Mayar Sherif's tennis journey is a testament to resilience and the power of mental fortitude. The Egyptian star, who has captivated the tennis world with her unwavering spirit and unique playing style, has emerged from a challenging period to reclaim her place among the top players. Her story is not just about winning titles; it's about overcoming personal struggles and rediscovering her passion for the sport.

Sherif's journey to the top has been remarkable. As the first and only Egyptian to win a WTA title, she has consistently demonstrated her skills on the court, featuring in 19 Grand Slam main draws and peaking at No. 31 in the world. Her unorthodox topspin forehand and relentless fighting spirit have earned her a reputation as a formidable opponent, especially on clay courts where she has excelled.

However, the past 12 months have been a test of her mental strength. Sherif found herself losing matches she wasn't accustomed to losing, and her ranking slipped to 129, her lowest since February 2021. The anxiety and frustration took over, causing her to question her abilities and the things that once made her special on the court.

"I went through a period this year I had never experienced before on the court," Sherif admitted. "I reached a point where my hand was shaking as I was serving from all the anxiety of not wanting to lose the same way again and again. Not wanting to get disappointed again and again. I really had such a hard time." This period was so challenging that she even considered pulling out of the Madrid Open, taking a week off to visit her sister in Warsaw.

It was in Warsaw that Sherif found her reset. She spent her time there hitting balls with her sister, not out of obligation but because she wanted to. She took the time to have fun, to laugh, and to feel like a normal person. "My trip to Warsaw was very important," she said. "It was like a reset. I was very happy there. I was seeing a lot of Egyptian people. My sister has a lot of friends there. There is a great Egyptian community there, I was shocked actually. We went to see a funny Egyptian movie; I haven’t laughed this hard in my life. I did a lot of things that made me feel like a normal person."

The turning point came at the French Open qualifying rounds against Martina Trevisan. Sherif felt something click within her as she battled past the Italian in three sets, qualifying for the main draw in Paris. This moment marked the beginning of her resurgence, as she started to regain confidence and feel the things she hadn't felt on the court for a long time.

Since then, Sherif has accumulated a 21-4 record, winning her second tour-level title and climbing back up the rankings from 127 to 55 in the world in just six weeks. Her hard work and mental resilience have paid off, and she is now stronger than ever, especially mentally.

"I think I'm stronger than ever now, especially mentally," Sherif said. "Because I touched the lowest of the lowest level mentally as a person. I learnt to have the confidence in the work, to have the confidence in the things that we do and to do the right things, and that the results will always come. If you fail and fail and fail, if you come out of that failure, if you succeed after that because you kept going, you will come back much stronger. And that's what I feel now."

Sherif's story is a reminder that success in tennis, or any other endeavor, is not just about physical ability but also mental strength. Her ability to overcome her struggles and rediscover her passion is a testament to her character and a source of inspiration for tennis fans around the world. As she continues to compete and strive for more, Sherif is a shining example of what can be achieved through determination and a positive mindset.
